  1. Hello. My name is John,
This is really amazing! After over fifty years, I came across this site. I am fifty-eight years old now. And I still have these two names that’s been in head since I was seven years old. (Gus and Mable) You see , it was in back in 1965 that my dad and I moved from Hickory, North Carolina to Port Orford ,Oregon. We lived in a beach house with around more of less a dozen houses, one and a few two story houses.
The street went right down the middle with the houses on both sides. I was seven years old and I remember the landlord and his wife, Gus and Mable. I recall so strong how kind they were, not only to me but to everyone. That’s just who they were.
Their was another boy that was my friend about my same age that live with his family I don’t recall his name though. But he did have a brother that was a few years older. I remember that very clearly, because we had a one time slight altercation. It was so funny now after all these years. I still laugh about it in my mind.
My dads name was Ralph Maynard, by the way he pass five years ago.
When we lived there my dad worked in logging. And I attended Port Orford Elementary School, Second grade class. I forgot my teachers name but I didn’t forget how beautiful she was and that I was the only boy in the class. I thought that I was in heaven.
One more thing I remember is walking on the beach looking for agates and petrified wood, and I almost forgot the garden snakes were everywhere.

    you’re getting old

  2. You’ve gotten the right place. Gus and Mabel were my grandparents and I’d spend summers there. You’re right. I’m old (72). You are the age of my younger brothers. You would have played with them. I’ll pass your recollections along to them and see what they remember. I’m glad you have fond memories of Agate Beach and my grandparents. I do too. They were remarkable people and so loved their place in Port Orford. Thanks for sharing your memories
